What's a Bkit? (short for Brain Kit) Well, it's a mental tool box for storing your learning tools, aka the things that help you learn better!
As a person with cognitive disabilites who struggled with academics despite loving to learn, I wanted to throw my hat into the ring and discuss ways to make learning easier for people like me. The current understandings of various cognitive and intellectual disabilities are lackluster and often hard to find for the non-academic. As someone who recently came to the conclusion I probably have FASD (Fetal Alchohol Spectrum Disorder) it has been very disheartening to see how little information and help there is for this disorder. Much like Autism (another disorder of mine) there is very little support for anyone above the age of ten and even for children, the toolkit is limited. So, I thought, who better to discuss and research this topic then someone living with a cognitive disability?
Being "stupid"
Cognitive and Intellectual disability is a very blurry subject. With the understandings of disorders based around how others percieve us rather than the actual Neuroscience behind it, we are defined by labels. I'm sure everyone with a mental disability has felt the weight of the word stupid before, and felt like they would never reach the level they needed to academically to succeeed in life. It's an unfortunate truth that the modern human society we live in was not made for us. It excludes us and expects us to follow a strict way of thinking, making education far more difficult than it needs to be. It is assumed we are too "stupid" to ever be an academic ourselves and taught not even to try, or taught that it's okay to work ourselves to the bone just to reach the same heights as our peers. In reality, neither of these are nesseccary. If the society around us simply made education accessable, we would not have to hinder ourself like this. But unfortunatley that is a difficult task and in the meanwhile people with mental disabilities still exist and must live their everyday lives. What about now?
Well, this is where tools come in.
