Mapping The Otherworld

The Otherworld?

The Otherworld is the term i will be using the describe all dimensions outside of our physical reality. An umbrella term of the many different dimensions.

The Central Three

The Central three describes the three worlds we share a physical realm with. Below the Earth's crust, The outer layer of the Earth, and beyond the Earth. Each has both a physical reality and a non physical, whether their metaphysical realities are connected like the physical is unknown. This can be considered as well the Central two and the Astral as the Astral is so different to the realms of the earth it can't exactly be considered the same, considering this way of thinking came about before the exploration of the Astral (space) it makes sense why the three would be grouped together. In the modern era whether you would like to group them together is up to you.

  • The Midworld/The Double World
  • The Underworld
  • The Astral Realm

Like the Midworld, there are many different places within the Underworld, various have been attessed to such as Faerieland, the various gates of the Ancient Egyptian Underworld, Tech Duinn etc. The Underworld is a place characterized by Joy, death and rebirth, Darkness, and justice.

Many spirits come from the Underworld as well and in my expierence have their own civilizations, tribes, species, and governments. The ruler of the underworld is generally a form of the pagan devil, a deity accounted for in the oldest civillizations in the world and still worked with today, as well as his wife associated with many goddesses, all of which might be the same goddess under different names. It is also possible he has multiple wives or her multiple husbands, polyamoury is a very common occurance and with gods who have lived since the beginning of our world, it is very possible they have had multiple lovers in their lifetimes. Regardless, the names of these rulers depends on the tradition and culture looked at, for the sake of simplicity lets use the Trad Craft names of The Queen Of Elfame and The Horned God/Pagan Devil.

The kingdom of the underworld is filled with many spirits each with their own individual roles, a good example being the court of Osiris (or the Horned God), there are many other dieties and spirits with different roles in the court. The Underworld is also characterized by it's many gates and entrances. To enter the underworld on must go through many gates ruled by many gatekeepers, many of which cna be tricky to enter and require a winning of the gatekeepers favour, unless of course one has died. Which brings me to another aspect of the underworld, death. Every Religion on earth has the beleif that we go into the earth when we die, spiritually like our physical body does. We go into the underworld and become the responcibility of the court's. This is where the modern idea of "hell" comes from, being one fate a person can befall in the underworld. Unlike modern dogma though, it is often those who do not respect the devil (whom is in charge of deciding ones fate once in the underworld) who are treated the worst. In the Ancient Egyptian book of Gates it's stated that enemies of Osiris go to the "place of descruction" to be burned ad punished rather than the various other places the dead go. His followers are treated the best but most of the dead are still reincarnated. In most underworld myths the person is reincarnated into a new body either in the underworld, in the metaphysical midworld or the physical midworld.
